Review: Popeyes Chicken Deluxe Sandwich

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

Popeyes Chicken Deluxe SandwichPrice: $3.49

Location: 6321 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago, IL 60659 (map); phone: (773) 588-8282

Rating: 4 out of 5 – good

After the blander Southern Style Chicken from McDonald’s last week, going to Popeyes seemed the right thing to do to satisfy my hunger on a late afternoon. I wasn’t going for the standard assortment of fried chicken, however, as I had another chicken sandwich in mind, this time the Chicken Deluxe… done up spicy like. (Of course, you could order this filet mild, but you’re not getting the full Popeyes experience if you go that route.)

Review: White Castle Jalapeno Cheeseburger

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Jalapeno CheeseburgerPrice: $0.73; paid – $0.69

Promotion: 69¢ cheeseburgers

Location: 5940 N. Ridge Ave., Chicago, IL 60660 (map); phone: (773) 271-9638

Rating: 5 out of 5 – great

Referenced repeatedly in the past, it’s high time we finally gave this baby a review. Obviously, I’m a big fan, as a visit to White Castle rarely passes without one of these sub-dollar sandwiches passing through my gullet. And what’s not to love about this perfect combination of meat, grilled onions, spongy soft buns, and jalapeno cheese? Contrary to the picture on the web site, the cheese we see here’s some variation on Swiss or provolone. Whatever it is, it plain works better than regular American, especially with the spicy burn at the back end (uh, of the throat) that makes it all worthwhile. This is the cheeseburger you should order when you’re at White Castle.

Review: White Castle Bacon Jalapeno Cheeseburger

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Bacon Jalapeno Cheese in boxPrice: $0.99(?); paid – $0.69

Promotion: 69¢ cheeseburgers

Location: 5940 N. Ridge Ave., Chicago, IL 60660 (map); phone: (773) 271-9638

Rating: 4 out of 5 – good

With that 69-cent cheeseburger promo going on at White Castle right now, it seemed like an easy choice to pick up a Jalapeno Cheeseburger and start the review process on it without delay. But my standard order morphed into “1 Bac Jal Che Brg” somewhere between voicing my desire and receiving a steamed sandwich. This item wasn’t even listed up on the menu board (either inside or out), so that 99-cent retail guess up top comes from the regular tab of a Bacon Cheeseburger, while my local pork-less Jalapeno goes for 73. I still only paid 69 cents, however, so whatever the regular price, I got my money’s worth o’ meat this Monday.

Status: independent

If you noticed that new last line up there, this is the first time I’ve reviewed something from a non-chain restaurant here on the site. Not that I have anything against the more independent establishments out there; it’s just that I’ve tried to keep to items people can easily find outside of northern Illinois (and, particularly, the City of Chicago). I’ll make exceptions for the offerings I really enjoy, however, and the Dipping Dogs at Wiener and Still Champion certainly fit the bill with regards to my personal tastes.

Review: Burger King Big Fish

The BK Big FishPrice: $2.79; paid – $3.50

Promotion: 2 Fish for $3.50

Location: 6261 N. Lincoln, Chicago, IL 60659 (map); phone: (773) 588-1976

Rating: 2 out of 5 – forgettable

Picture this: you’re sitting in a favored restaurant on a night out, free to spend a bit because that’s what you’re there to do. Sounds pretty good so far, huh? Well, what started out so promisingly begins to head downhill almost immediately. You know things are looking bad when you’re already thinking about what else you could be doing (or, in this case, eating) while you’re still sitting in said restaurant. That was the story with the BK Big Fish I had tonight. I even had two — on sale — to make sure my first impressions weren’t misguided. Unfortunately, attempting to improve this lug is not a smart investment to make.
