Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Jalapeno CheeseburgerPrice: $0.73; paid – $0.69

Promotion: 69¢ cheeseburgers

Location: 5940 N. Ridge Ave., Chicago, IL 60660 (map); phone: (773) 271-9638

Rating: 5 out of 5 – great

Referenced repeatedly in the past, it’s high time we finally gave this baby a review. Obviously, I’m a big fan, as a visit to White Castle rarely passes without one of these sub-dollar sandwiches passing through my gullet. And what’s not to love about this perfect combination of meat, grilled onions, spongy soft buns, and jalapeno cheese? Contrary to the picture on the web site, the cheese we see here’s some variation on Swiss or provolone. Whatever it is, it plain works better than regular American, especially with the spicy burn at the back end (uh, of the throat) that makes it all worthwhile. This is the cheeseburger you should order when you’re at White Castle.

Review: Little Caesars Crazy Bread

Crazy Bread bagPrice: $1.00

Location: 7003 N. Clark St., Chicago, IL 60626 (map); phone: (773) 465-8307

Rating: 5 out of 5 – great

If you really need to be told what’s in the bag, Little Caesars would have you know that there’s “Eight warm sticks of freshly baked bread topped with the flavors of butter and garlic, then sprinkled with Parmesan cheese” snugly wrapped inside. If you’re in the market for a meal but have only got a dollar, these are the greasy-good breadsticks for you. Just remember to ask for them soft because the HOT-N-READY default Bread might be cooked a little too long and not go down quite as easy.

Review: Auntie Anne’s Original Pretzel

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

Auntie Anne’s Original PretzelPrice: $2.39; paid – $0.00 (optional caramel dip – $0.49+)

Promotion: Free Pretzel Day

Location: Lincolnwood Town Center, 3333 W. Touhy Ave., Lincolnwood, IL 60712 (map); phone: (847) 329-8250

Rating: 2 out of 5 – forgettable

Wet snow was no obstacle in reaching the ground-floor Auntie Anne’s at the local mall, but a ten-minute wait in line before the four-o’clock promotion deadline did provide some drama (as to whether I would receive my free pretzel or not). In the end, Free Pretzel Day lived up to its billing, but my impressions of the Original left me sadly unsatisfied.
