McDonald’s other all-white meat addition to its menu was supposed to be better than its crumbling biscuit counterpart (at least in my mind), but it managed to fall short while regularly listing for a dollar more than its breakfast-based brother. So how’d this somewhat larger sandwich manage that? Surprisingly, by not making itself more memorable with a crazy crumbly bun. The Southern Style Chicken Sandwich is simply bland and perfectly fits the description of forgettable.

Since McDonald’s had been advertising its new McSkillet Burrito breakfast option rather heavily on television, billboards, and the like recently, you had to figure that Burger King was working on some sort of response. Well, I’d been seeing some posters in its restaurant windows for a similar-looking morning menu item lately, so I guess this is it: “The new Cheesy Bacon BK WRAPPER is stuffed with melted cheese, scrambled eggs, warm hash browns and crispy bacon made to perfection.” Made to perfection? Oh, if it only were…

Picture this: you’re sitting in a favored restaurant on a night out, free to spend a bit because that’s what you’re there to do. Sounds pretty good so far, huh? Well, what started out so promisingly begins to head downhill almost immediately. You know things are looking bad when you’re already thinking about what else you could be doing (or, in this case, eating) while you’re still sitting in said restaurant. Wet snow was no obstacle in reaching the ground-floor Auntie Anne’s at the local mall, but a ten-minute wait in line before the four-o’clock promotion deadline did provide some drama (as to whether I would receive my free pretzel or not). In the end, Free Pretzel Day lived up to its billing, but my impressions of the Original left me sadly unsatisfied.

I’ve long been a fan of chocolate mixed with mint, so who can argue with a FREE slice o’ York peppermint pie from Burger King? Not me, that’s who! …But, how sensational can a processed dessert be when every picture of its topping looks strangely unappetizing (and when cream isn’t my strong suit)? I found out late last night when I opened up the 3-oz. snack box. Surprisingly, my first few nibbles didn’t produce tremendous winces on my brow; I was gonna be okay. The Oreo-esque crust complemented the whipped white filling to a degree, and I was reminded of certain lighter cheesecake consistencies. (more…)
