Rating: 4 out of 5 – good
It can sometimes be hard to find a good (frozen, virgin) strawberry daiquiri at higher-end sit-down restaurants, and that certainly is the case at fast-food places, too. What I would settle for, however, is a reasonably priced fruity slush — which might be considered as less thick, but more easily drinkable than a smoothie. Taco Bell seems to have answered my prayers with the Frutista Freeze, a permanent addition to its lineup, now available in Strawberry and Mango Strawberry. Both versions are topped with real strawberries (which I suppose makes up for the fact that there’s “natural fruit flavors,” but no actual “fruit juice,” inside).

It used to be that finding coupons for McDonald’s was a rare instance in the Sunday paper or a local ad insert. Now the McMarketers seem to be taking a more proactive approach to discounts by mailing promo coupons straight to its desired demographics, and I couldn’t be happier.
I’ve already encountered no fewer than three mailings to Korean Americans — mostly in Korean — including coupons for free Southern Style Chicken Sandwiches and Biscuits, no purchase necessary. While I’ve personally been left out of the biscuit bonanza myself, it would make sense to assume that other ethnic groups were targeted by McDonald’s for their latest product offerings as well. It’s also good to know that friends and family are perfectly willing to donate their mailing-list prizes, even if the food items aren’t exactly best in class. (Free food is still free food.)

Price: $1.99; paid – $0.99
Promotion: an expiring coupon from the White Castle web site
Location: 5940 N. Ridge Ave., Chicago, IL 60660 (map); phone: (773) 271-9638
Rating: 4 out of 5 – good
My experiences with White Castle sides haven’t been all that encouraging in the past, but people can let bygones be bygones when they’re hungry (and sitting on a coupon that’s about to expire). So what happened here? Not only were these chicken rings from White Castle hot and fresh outta the fryer, but they compared nicely to McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets in taste and texture, if not in overall shape. In fact, I was so busy gobbling ‘em up and taking pics that I didn’t bother to check ‘n’ see whether I got six rings or not with my order. Regardless of how many I got, they were all pretty good.

There have been times when I’ve felt obligated to try something new, whether prompted by lowly poster or towering billboard. And then there have been those times when I was lured to sample something I wouldn’t otherwise by mysteriously procured coupon or limited-time offer. But it’s rare when my takeout proclivities are pushed over the edge by a popular webcomic. As much as possible, I prefer that my destination dining not be swayed by the musings of colorful characters (whatever the medium), but it’s hard not to feel compelled when a new menu item’s ominously referred to as “a kind of epitaph for my nation.” [The comic... for your perusal.] How could I not feel the call of duty to report on this beast myself?

Price: $1.69; paid – $0.00
Promotion: free with “Matt’s Monday” Arby’s Racing deal
Location: 3931 N. Harlem Ave., Chicago, IL 60634 (map)
Rating: 3 out of 5 – acceptable
You know the main attractions on Arby’s menu have traditionally been its roast-beef sandwiches, but it can be quite helpful to have attractive sideshows as well (to eke out a little extra profit margin on a full-sized order). While Arby’s apparently has a limited supply of homestyle fries and “potato cakes” at participating locations, the form of fried potato most often associated with the chain (at least for me) has been the Curly Fry. It is described as follows on the Arby’s web site: “Perfectly seasoned ringlets, fried to a golden brown and served hot make these the perfect side item to any meal.” Perfect might not be the right word to lavish on these fried ringlets, but maybe I’ve just been missing something up till now.
