It’s interesting that when I finally got around to reviewing something from Taco Bell, there’s a new salmonella scare surrounding raw tomatoes that’s got chains around the country pulling fresh tomatoes off their menus. Taco Bell is, of course, not immune to the dangers of bad marketing (nor unfeeling as to its customers’ health), so it was fortuitous that I already wanted to check out a menu item that included no diced tomatoes whatsoever. (The additional Fire Sauce I sprinkled on later presumably uses fully cooked tomatoes in its formula.)

Since McDonald’s had been advertising its new McSkillet Burrito breakfast option rather heavily on television, billboards, and the like recently, you had to figure that Burger King was working on some sort of response. Well, I’d been seeing some posters in its restaurant windows for a similar-looking morning menu item lately, so I guess this is it: “The new Cheesy Bacon BK WRAPPER is stuffed with melted cheese, scrambled eggs, warm hash browns and crispy bacon made to perfection.” Made to perfection? Oh, if it only were…

Review: McDonald’s McSkillet Burrito w/Sausage

New McSkillet and drinkPrice: $2.49; paid – $1.39

Promotion: free with leap-year drink-purchase deal

Availability: breakfast hours

Location: 6740 N. Clark St., Chicago, IL 60626 (map); phone: (773) 743-6932

Rating: 4 out of 5 – good

You might have already read about the promo used on this morning menu item (linked up top), but here’s what McDonald’s says goes into its relatively new, more-premium breakfast-wrap option: “savory sausage, scrambled eggs, melted cheese[s], skillet potatoes, bell peppers & onions, authentic fire-roasted salsa, and a warm tortilla.” How authentic any of this is is not my main concern; I just want to know how to rate what you get for the money. It certainly is worth considering in the morning but doesn’t jump out at you with its $2.49 regular price tag. (See below for more of “the inside stuff.”)

Feb. 28, 29: Free McSkillet Burrito w/medium or large drink buy at McDonald’s

McSkillet Burrito

Looks like Leap Year brings some advantages to the fast-food realm. I found the McSkillet Burrito to be an all-right breakfast option when I tried it under similar circumstances with a coupon late last year. Could be just the morning pick-me-up this week (if you can get to a McDonald’s early enough to get one), though not nearly as overwhelming as my dual-Double-Whopper-double-fries orgy at Burger King on a Leap Night back in the ’90s. Can pure beef exude from one’s pores? Yes, yes it can.

Oh, and here’s the other fine print you might want to know for this promotion: “Offer for McSkillet Burrito with sausage only. Available breakfast hours only. Price and participation may vary. While supplies last. Limit one per customer/per drink order. Not valid with any other offer, discount, coupon or Extra Value Meal. Price of required purchase posted on menu board.”

Chipotle: Free burrito Feb. 13 or 14 with a $10 gift-card purchase by Feb. 12

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

Patriotic Chipotle BurritoIf you feel you’ve done your patriotic duty and voted in your state’s presidential primary (or will do so, depending on your state’s schedule), then march yourself down to the nearest Chipotle and pick up a $10 gift card. Purchases from February 1st – 12th, 2008 will net you a free burrito come February 13th or 14th, so long as you bring in that dated gift-card receipt as proof.

Sounds like the perfect gift for a loved one — if that loved one loves Chipotle, that is. Just heed Chipotle’s humble Valentine request/warning: “*Please purchase the gift card from our restaurants (not online) and redeem the free burrito on a separate visit.” All the better to eat with those you love (I suppose).
