There have been times when I’ve felt obligated to try something new, whether prompted by lowly poster or towering billboard. And then there have been those times when I was lured to sample something I wouldn’t otherwise by mysteriously procured coupon or limited-time offer. But it’s rare when my takeout proclivities are pushed over the edge by a popular webcomic. As much as possible, I prefer that my destination dining not be swayed by the musings of colorful characters (whatever the medium), but it’s hard not to feel compelled when a new menu item’s ominously referred to as “a kind of epitaph for my nation.” [The comic... for your perusal.] How could I not feel the call of duty to report on this beast myself?

Review: Burger King Whopper Jr.

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Whopper Jr.Price: $1.00

Location: 6261 N. Lincoln, Chicago, IL 60659 (map); phone: (773) 588-1976

Rating: 4 out of 5 – good

The Whopper Jr. was not something I’d been looking forward to revisiting anytime soon, but a late Friday-night attack of hunger pangs forced my hand. (Actually, running out of meat for the new Burger King Steakburgers ultimately did that, but since I was already at the local BK, there was no sense in wasting gas by driving home on an empty stomach.) At any rate, this time around with the Jr. proved to be a surprisingly pleasant experience, as I actually enjoyed my smaller-sized sandwich quite a bit, even after taking my worked-up appetite into account. The key to a good Whopper, it seems, is all in the customizing — having it Your Way, if you will.

Review: Cheesy Bacon BK Wrapper

Saturday, April 12th, 2008

Cheesy Bacon BK WrapperPrice: $1.39

Availability: breakfast hours; participation may vary

Location: 6261 N. Lincoln, Chicago, IL 60659 (map); phone: (773) 588-1976

Rating: 2 out of 5 – forgettable

Since McDonald’s had been advertising its new McSkillet Burrito breakfast option rather heavily on television, billboards, and the like recently, you had to figure that Burger King was working on some sort of response. Well, I’d been seeing some posters in its restaurant windows for a similar-looking morning menu item lately, so I guess this is it: “The new Cheesy Bacon BK WRAPPER is stuffed with melted cheese, scrambled eggs, warm hash browns and crispy bacon made to perfection.” Made to perfection? Oh, if it only were…

Review: Burger King Hamburger

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

BK HamburgerPrice: $0.99; paid – $0.59

Promotion: 59-cent Tuesdays

Location: 2401-2407 W. Ogden Ave., Chicago, IL 60608 (map); phone: (312) 243-5293

Rating: 3 out of 5 – acceptable

Like its cheeseburger brother, the BK Hamburger serves up some decent value in a remarkably short package. (You could say “thin,” but unless you’re talking vertically, this burger’s still larger and wider than one from White Castle.) The difference between Burger King’s Hamburger and its Cheeseburger would seem to only encompass 10 to 20 cents — depending on the sale price — and a slice of melted cheese, but that seems to make all the difference to this rater in terms of total taste and final score.

Review: Burger King Cheeseburger

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

BK CheeseburgerPrice: $1.19; paid – $0.69

Promotion: 69-cent Tuesdays

Location: 2401-2407 W. Ogden Ave., Chicago, IL 60608 (map); phone: (312) 243-5293

Rating: 4 out of 5 – good

In these days of super-sized sandwiches, it’s hard not to look down on the humble cheeseburger of yore with its diminutive contents and singular patty. Slimming down from the standard Whopper, even the official description of the regular Burger King Cheeseburger plays up its modest adornments: “A masterpiece of simplicity — one flame-broiled beef patty topped with melted American cheese, pickles, ketchup, and mustard all on a toasted sesame seed bun….” What should be emphasized is its excellent balance of tastes — melding into a burger greater than the sum of its parts — that deserves notice above its Happy Meal rivals, especially when confronted with local discounts (as during the weekly promo noted above).
